WASHINGTON ? Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) is pushing for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to remove menthol cigarettes from the marketplace. In a letter to FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg, the senator encouraged the agency to continue its follow-up on recommendations from the Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee (TPSAC) regarding menthol cigarettes.

Blumenthal?s letter said that the ?TPSAC found clear and compelling evidence that menthol cigarettes have an adverse impact on public health in the United States. ? Such findings about the dangers of menthol tobacco products in general, and to our youth in particular, are highly concerning, and provide abundant grounds for FDA to develop a plan that will result in the removal of menthol from tobacco products to protect public health.?

Read more about the impact a potential ban on menthol would have on the retail community in NACS Magazine.
