PROVO, UT ? A Provo councilman proposed earlier this week allowing Sunday beer and alcohol sales, and the town?s chief administrative officer said he favors addressing the issue at a September 20 study session, the Daily Herald reports.

According to Wayne Parker, Provo's chief administrative officer, alcohol free has been a way of life in Provo, a prohibition that has eased somewhat over time. "We started with no beer sold ever, and we started chipping away at it," Parker said. "No beer sales on Sunday was a concession for the community."

However, the concession was always motivated more by culture rather than politics, an idea that both Healey and Parker said deserves reexamination.

"I don't have a problem with it," Healey said. "To have a shelf shut down in the store doesn't make sense. For some people Sundays are the day they shop."

Councilman Sterling Beck warned of the precedent such a change would make, but conceded time would eventually win the fight: "We're on a slippery slope here. But one day prohibition will end in Provo."

Other council members voiced approval for a change.

"We're losing revenue," said councilwoman Sherrie Hall Everett. "It's a no-brainer. People are driving through our city to get to Springville so they can buy their beer."

The council voted 5-0 to bring the issue forward to the Sept. 20 study session.
