FUKUSHIMA, JAPAN ? More than six months after an earthquake and tsunami devastated northeastern Japan, residents near the Fukushima nuclear plant still lack access to basic food and commodities. In an effort to serve the areas most in need, Japanese convenience store chain Family Mart launched three mobile convenience stores earlier this month that roam the city, offering groceries and other essentials, the International Business Times reports.
The mobile stores offer walk-in convenience in a truck that stocks 300 individual items like food, beverages, and household commodities.
The stores, which are mobile trucks powered by propane gas and equipped with a generator, can travel for a week without refueling. They operate from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, serving three different locations each day.
A Family Mart spokesperson said the original intent was to serve remote areas, but after the March 11 tsunami devastated Tohoku region, the company modified its plan.
