CHICAGO ? Foodservice traffic lagged in most countries around the world in the second quarter this year, in response to waning consumer confidence, The NPD Group reports.
According to NPD?s CREST, which tracks commercial foodservice visits, traffic was down in Australia (-1 percent), Canada (-1 percent),Japan (-3percent),and Spain (-6 percent), while visits were flat in Germany, the United Kingdomand the United States.France (+1 percent) and Italy (+1 percent) realized modest improvements, while China showed the strongest visit gains, with a +15 percent increase.
?With so much uncertainty surrounding the local and global economy, consumer confidence remains low and hence it is difficult to forecast any real improvement in foodservice traffic,? said Guy Fielding, managing director of NPD?s U.K. foodservice. ?In addition, the recent riots in the U.K. will negatively impact the third quarter foodservice figures as consumers refused to venture into city and town center?s due to the unrest.?
NPD reported that QSRs posted growth in every country, while full service foodservice concepts mostly declined.
?The foodservice industry is truly a bellwether of the economy and, regardless of country, the consumers? state of mind,? said Bob O?Brien, global senior vice president of foodservice at NPD. ?The second quarter foodservice measures were a direct reflection of the times.?
