WASHINGTON ? A Shell station in Laurel, Maryland, was one of three sites nationwide to help promote the Discovery channel?s new season of ?Gold Rush? by giving away $20 in free gas for each fill up from 6:30 am to 9:30 am ? which in D.C. translates to rush hour.

Fortunately Discovery chose a Friday to hold the promo, which it footed the bill for, when traffic is typically lighter in the D.C.-metro area.

The promotion, called ?Strike it Rich,? took place in Chicago, Washington and Los Angeles ? three cities known stressful morning commutes.

?We all know that the economy is tough,? Discovery Channel CMO David Shackley. ?The men featured in 'Gold Rush' are hard-working Americans, like our viewers, who are taking risks and trying to make a decent living. This is our way of giving back to the community with a little liquid gold to start the work day on the right foot.?

?Gold Rush? is a reality show entering its second season: ?In the face of the economic meltdown, determined men risk everything to strike it rich mining for gold in the wilds of the far north. Todd Hoffman of Sandy, Oregon, along with his father, lead a group of greenhorn miners in search of the American dream and a new frontier.?
