DALLAS ? ?Tens of billions of Coca-Cola cups? will have QR codes promoting Coke?s commitment to ?Save the Polar Bears? campaign, said Mike Wehrs, ScanBuy CEO/president. ScanBuy will support the codes that appear on the cups, Online Media Daily reports.

The coded Coke cups are available November 2011 through February 2012 at 7-Eleven, Subway and other retail locations. ?We're expecting at least 500,000 scans, but that could easily double,? said Wehrs.

Putting a QR code on a cold beverage cup had its own set of challenges, said Wehr, who added that the cup code can stress the scanners because of its curved surface and condensation. Only Apple devices can use the QR codes. Wehrs said that the ?Polar Bears? effort will drive heavy traffic to web pages keyed to the campaign.

The QR codes also are on posters, as well as the cups. The Facebook page the code directs users to lets them toss ?snowballs? at friends. Coca-Cola will receive handset type by model and carrier and scan frequency data from the mobile QR code scans.

Coke is using other media to promote the campaign, such as its $2 million pledge to the World Wildlife Fund?s polar bear habitat conservation effort in the Artic, which will be on U.S. and Canadian Coke cans. Those cans will reserve the classic red Coke color scheme, with a mostly white can and a red polar bear graphic.?
