Title: San Fran McDonald?s to Charge for Happy Meal Toys
Description: San Francisco McDonald?s restaurants are now charging 10 cents for Happy Meal toys in response to a city law taking effect today.
Page Content: SAN FRANCISCO ? In response to a city law that takes effect today banning toy giveaways in kids? meals high in fat, salt and sugar content, McDonald?s has begun charging its San Francisco customers 10 cents who request a toy be added to their Happy Meals, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
San Francisco?s Healthy Food Incentives Ordinance withstood a veto by then-Mayor Gavin Newsom last fall, which means chain restaurants will no longer be able to give away toys with children?s meals that don?t meet strict nutritional standards.
The ban was aimed at combating childhood obesity, while opponents claim it imposes nanny-state politics.
"This law is not what my customers wanted or asked for, but the law's the law," said Scott Rodrick, who owns 10 of the 19 McDonald's franchises in the city.
Rather than adjusting the fat, salt and sugar in his children?s meals and offering fruit, Rodrick will instead abide by the law beginning today, charging customers an extra 10 cents for a Happy Meal toy. Those outside of San Francisco will continue to receive a Happy Meal toy without charge.
"It complies with the letter of the law," Rodrick said. The three other McDonald's franchise owners in the city have agreed to follow the same tack.
The 10-cent fee came after surveying customers, said Danya Proud, director of media relations for McDonald's USA. "They told us 10 cents is fair and reasonable.?
