MADISON, WI ? A bill proposed by a Wisconsin legislator would ban concealed weapons at Wisconsin gas stations, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports.
State Assembly Democrat Josh Zepnick said he has many constituents who have been victims of violent crime and that Milwaukee in particular has seen an uptick in violent crime around convenience stores.
"This is a serious pattern of crime that has escalated, presumably due to tough economic times and the 'ease' of getting in/out of a gas station for criminal activity," Zepnick said.
Noting a state Legislature that has shown a willingness to expand gun rights, Zepnick conceded the proposal faces stiff challenges.
"In short, this is a work in progress," he said. " Isolating one form of business for certain protection is noteasy from a Legislation standpoint all I can do is keep trying."
If passed, the measure would punish going armed at a station by up to 18 months in prison. It exempts police, corrections officers, military personnel, and private security guards who are on duty.
The bill also upgrades any act of theft or criminal damage to gas station property as a felony.
