MENOMONEE FALLS, WI ? Kohl?s Department Stores announced yesterday that the company will install electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at 33 stores nationwide.

Participating stores will offer one to four parking spots reserved for EV drivers to charge their vehicle at no cost while they shop. Customers activate the stations by radio frequency identification (RFID) cards available at the Kohl?s customer service desk or via phone numbers provided on the charging stations.

Kohl?s is partnering with ECOtality Inc. and Coulomb Technologies for this pilot program, which will be funded partially through the U.S. Department of Energy.

?Kohl?s pilot of electric vehicle charging stations demonstrates our commitment to advancing environmental solutions in a meaningful and tangible way for our customers,? said John Worthington, Kohl?s chief administrative officer. ?Not only are these stations an added shopper convenience, they also encourage environmental responsibility among our shoppers. We will continue to explore additional locations to pilot charging stations at our stores nationwide.?

The EV charging stations support Kohl?s commitment to environmental responsibility and follow efforts by the retailer at waste reduction and recycling, the use of renewable energy, and the implementation of environmentally responsible building design and operation.

Kohl?s ranks first in retail and second overall on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency?s list of top green power partners.

The EV charging stations will be installed in Arizona (3), California (7), Florida (4), Maryland (1), Michigan (2), New York (1), Oregon (3), Tennessee (4), Texas (4), Virginia (1), and Washington (3).
