WASHINGTON ? The National Restaurant Association (NRA) estimated earlier this week that 100 million Americans will celebrate the New Year by visiting a restaurant or bar or ordering restaurant takeout or delivery, with nearly half of American adults dining out with family or friends over the next several weeks to celebrate the holidays.

"New Year's is traditionally one of the most popular times of the year to dine out," said Hudson Riehle, senior vice president of NRA?s Research and Knowledge Group. "This year, we expect to see a welcomed bump in customer traffic both on- and off-premises as we ring in the New Year."

The survey revealed 20% of consumers plan to eat at a restaurant or bar on New Year?s Eve, and 22% will order restaurant takeout or delivery on that day. On January 1, 12% will dine out and 16% will order takeout or delivery from a restaurant.

Christmas, too, will see its share of diners, with 10% of consumers eating out on December 24, 8% dining out on Christmas Day, and 4% doing so on December 20, the start of Hanukkah.

The NRA based its projections on analysis and research conducted over the last two decades.
