WASHINGTON ? Last week the National Labor Relations Board voted 2-1 to tentatively approved new rules that are intended to speed up the average length of time for union elections. A final vote is pending.
Despite a threat by the lone NLRB Republican member Brian Hayes to resign, thereby denying a quorum and bringing NLRB actions to a halt, he ultimately chose to remain on the board and voted against the proposal. On the same day of the board's vote, legislation authored by U.S. Rep. Kline (R-MN), the Workforce Democracy and Fairness Act, passed the House by a vote of 235-188. The legislation seeks to reverse recent pro-labor decisions made by the NLRB.

The rash of NLRB activity and the Senate?s refusal to acknowledge Republican ideas to create jobs has more to do with election-year politics than sound politics. With control of the Senate and the White House in Democrat hands, every pro-labor idea will receive some attention between now and the 2012 election in November.
