NEW YORK ? Whether it?s because they no longer need a job or found a better one, here?s a sign that the job market may be improving: more workers are quitting.
The New York Times writes that, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, 1.9 million workers resigned from their jobs in October, which is the first month in the two years from early 2009 through early 2011 that so many workers handed in their pink slips.

?Quits troughed in late 2009 or early 2010, ?John Wohlford, Bureau of Labor Statistics? branch chief for the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, told the newspaper, adding, ?They have recovered some, but we are not anywhere near where we were before the recession.?

The Times reports that the number of private sector workers who were laid off or discharged in the past year is at its lowest level for any similar time period since the government began collecting the stats in 1990. The rate of hiring is also low, but has improved since 2009. The amount of workers quitting their jobs ? ?a sign of confidence that they can do better elsewhere? ? has also increased.
