WASHINGTON ? In a procedural vote early Monday morning, the Senate voted 60-40 to advance health-care legislation, clearing the way for passage of the bill later this week.
The vote limits debate on the $871 billion bill, which was passed without any Republican support. Democrats maintain that the legislation will provide healthcare insurance to millions of currently uninsured Americans while helping reduce the budget deficit.
Republicans argue that the bill will cost jobs, increase the deficit, and result in poorer medical care.
The bill must still be reconciled with a separate health-care measure that the House passed in November.
