NEW YORK Coca-Cola was reportedly in talks to acquire Monster Beverage Corp., a purchase that would be the largest brand acquisition for Coca-Cola, the Wall Street Journal reported. With a market capitalization of more than $11 billion, Monster would provide Coca-Cola with enhanced presence in the energy drink category. Currently, it owns Full Throttle and Fuze NOS in the U.S., and Burn in international markets.

Monster has experienced record growth, with fourth quarter sales that rose 28% to $467.3 million, compared to the same period last year. Its 2011 annual revenue was $1.7 billion, a 31% lift from 2010. Analysts project the brand will grow 17% this year.

Coca-Cola issued the following statement yesterday afternoon: "Coca-Cola has a distribution relationship with Monster in many markets, including the United States. Therefore, we are always in contact with Monster to maximize the value of our commercial arrangements. At this time, we are not in discussions to acquire the Monster Beverage Corporation. We continue to review the best ways to maximize the value of our relationship."
