YORKTOWN, Penn. ? In response to what some consumers are calling ?confusing? or ?deceptive,? Yorktown County Legislator Mike Kaplowitz wants fuel retailers to post their cash and credit prices equally and clearly on their roadside signs, reports The Journal News, noting that the words ?cash only? in small lettering is not good enough.
Failure to comply with the proposed change to current law would result in a $1,000-a-day fine. ?It's a matter of not being deceptive," Kaplowitz said at a press conference outside a Citgo station.
According to Kaplowitz, state law mandates that fuel retailers post prices at the pump, while, local towns regulate the larger signage. The county legislator said he wrote the proposed law ?to make it easy and inexpensive for stations to comply without micromanaging the signs? content,? notes the news source.
Ron Guarino, owner of the Autobahn/Citgo Yorktown station, estimates that only 10% of his customers pay for fill-ups with cash, while the price difference roughly triples when customers use plastic. He says that credit card swipe fees are to blame for the differences in prices at other stations nearby.
?One thing I expect as a consumer is when I see a price, that's the price I pay,? Guarino told the news source. ?
