WASHINGTON ? The U.S. Supreme Court will begin its review of challenges to the health-care reform law on Nov. 10 during a private conference, The Hill reports. The justices could reveal its decision as early as Nov. 14, although most cases are not decided that quickly.
Five of the six separate petitions filed requesting the court?s ruling will be before the judges. A lower court had previously dismissed a sixth case filed by Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli.
At issue on the five cases is the constitutionality of the individual coverage mandate in the health care law. The November conference will be the first formal meeting on the cases. The justices will consider whether to hear any of the lawsuits, which one might be put on the docket and how to merge the issues addressed in the briefs.
Legal experts predict that the justices will accept the suit from the National Federation of Independent Business and 26 states. The NFIB, those states, plus the Obama administration have picked that lawsuit as the one the court should hear. The administration had bypassed the appeals court in the hope that the high court would hear this case.
