WASHINGTON ? The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced a temporary waiver of certain federal clean gasoline requirements for gasoline sold and distributed in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina and North Carolina.
EPA made the waiver announcement after exercising its authority under the Clean Air Act and pursuant to the request of several governors, whose states have seen their supply of fuel from Gulf-area refineries disrupted following Hurricane Isaac.
The waiver was granted by EPA in coordination with the Department of Energy, with EPA administrator Lisa Jackson determining extreme and unusual supply circumstances exist that could result in a temporary shortage of gasoline compliant with federal regulations.
The waiver applies to the use of low Reid Vapor Pressure (RVP) ?summertime? gasoline through September 15. EPA determined that because of refinery outages caused by Hurricane Isaac, there would not be sufficient supplies of summertime gasoline for these states until that time.
The waiver allows available supplies of higher RVP ?wintertime? gasoline to be used prior to September 15, in order to prevent a gasoline shortage in the affected states.
EPA said it is actively monitoring fuel supplies in states bordering the affected areas and will ?act expeditiously if needed to prevent a shortfall.?
