LONDON ? Royal Dutch Shell PLC and Waitrose announced plans earlier this week to install two Little Waitrose convenience stores into Shell gas stations in a two-site trial later this year, part of a dedicated effort for the U.K. supermarket chain to expand into smaller outlets, Bloomberg reports.
Waitrose will both operate and manage two Shell-owned sites in Watford, England and in London, serving as an agent for fuel sales. The two sites are in addition to 23 convenience stores for Waitrose, including several at gas stations located along highways.
"Bringing Waitrose to more people in more places is a big priority for us and so I'm very pleased to be embarking on this new pilot with Shell," said Mark Price, managing director of Waitrose.
The convenience store format has been a major growth area in recent years for U.K. supermarkets.
