Week Ahead
This morning, President Obama will lay out his plan for creating jobs. Meanwhile, in Washington, the focus is on the ?Super Committee.? The Federal Election Committee has its hands full as large industries are ?bundling? checks and delivering them to those Members who have coveted spots on the Super Committee, which is tasked to find $1.5 trillion in debt reducing cuts. Bundling checks to help keep specific tax credits/subsidies has become so rampant that Senators David Vitter (R-LA) and Dean Heller (R-NV) have drafted legislation that would make members of the Super Committee disclose their fundraising results every 48 hours instead of every quarter.

NACS is not bundling anything. Although we have a lot of important issues that affect members, we have consistently been communicating our industry?s voice via petition drives, NACS Days on the Hill, various calls to action, and overall grassroots advocacy, and that has lessened the pressure to call in special favors. Thank you for being responsive as one united voice. FAA, Highway Extensions Cleared in Senate
The Senate passed a bill on September 15 to extend Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and surface transportation programs, including an extension of the gasoline and diesel fuel tax through March 31, 2012, which were set to expire at the end of this month.President Obama is expected to sign the bill into law.

The transportation package, the product of a bipartisan agreement reached last week by congressional leaders, extends highway funding and the gas and diesel fuel tax by six months. Also included in the bill is a six-month extension of the Leaking Underground Storage Tank (LUST) tax, which was established in 1986 to ensure that all tank owners take appropriate means to prevent fuel from leaking into the environment.
